Stepping back into clinical dentistry—whether after a career break, as you settle into NHS practice, or simply after time away from key procedures—can feel daunting. This hands-on, minimal-lecture programme is designed to help you rebuild confidence at the chair by revisiting the practical restorative skills you use every day, in a supportive, no-judgement learning environment.

Delivered in LonDEC’s state-of-the-art phantom head laboratory at King’s College London Dental Institute, the course is structured as three separate full-day modules that must be attended as a complete programme.

What you’ll practise across the 3 modules

1) Indirect restorations — preparation techniques & material selection

• Accurate tooth preparation for full and partial coverage restorations
• Material-specific reductions and evidence-based preparation design
• Understanding contemporary materials including lithium disilicate, zirconia and hybrid ceramics
• Avoiding common preparation errors and strengthening laboratory communication

2) Temporisation & luting — protocols that support predictable outcomes

• Fabricating well-fitting, functional and aesthetic provisional restorations
• Selecting and using temporary cements appropriately
• Understanding and applying definitive luting options: resin-based, conventional and self-adhesive systems
• Cementation protocols, isolation, excess removal and finishing

3) Contemporary direct restorations — composite (and when amalgam is still appropriate)

• Cavity design and preparation for a range of direct composite restorations
• Adhesive protocols and bonding systems in different clinical contexts
• Layering, finishing and polishing for durable, aesthetic outcomes
• Review of amalgam indications and handling/condensation techniques
